What is The Button On The Top of a Baseball Hat Called
What’s up with all the buttons on your baseball caps? Well, it seems like everything has a name. The little button at the top of each panel is no exception! It doesn’t serve any purpose other than covering where six pieces are sewn together- but hey guess what?! This simple motion can be called by many different names too; from “squatchee” to even more imaginative ones such as ” Squatcho”.
The idea behind the term has been linked to broadcaster for baseball Bob Brenly, but this isn’t the entire story. In an article written by Paul Lukas on the website Uni-Watch which offers an in-depth look at uniforms worn by athletes, Bob Brenly was interviewed and while he admitted that the phrase was his however, he claimed that he wasn’t the one who invented it.
Brenly was once an elite catcher in the major leagues and claimed that he’d get away his “squatcho” since catchers weren’t required to wear a helmet underneath their masks during his playing times. It was for security since hitting the “squatcho” was dangerous to the head. Brenly said he had heard the word “squatcho” an “squatcho” from a teammate of his from the San Francisco Giants in the 1980s, named Mike Krukow.
When Lukas then questioned Krukow about the term, he stated that he first saw the word at the Pittsburgh bookstore in 1984 , and that it was from a book titled “Sniglets. Sniglets was a book written by Rich Hall which had words that belong in the dictionary, but aren’t. The book states that “squatcho” was the term that was used to describe the button placed on top of a baseball cap.
Brenly and Krukow who still worked as baseball broadcasters, used the phrase “squatcho” or “squatchee” in their broadcasts, to refer to the button that sits on the top of the baseball cap. The term was popular and the button was referred to as”squatcho “squatcho” or “squatchee” since.
